Fire Doors FAQs

A fire door is a specially designed door that is constructed to withstand fire for a specific period of time, usually 30 or 60 minutes. Fire doors are made from materials like solid timber, glass, steel, or gypsum to provide enhanced fire resistance. Internal fire doors are installed within buildings to create compartments that help to slow down the spread of fire and smoke, giving occupants more time to evacuate safely and protecting the property from extensive damage. FD30 fire doors are a common type, which can resist fire for up to 30 minutes.

Yes, fire doors are required to be self-closing in most cases. The fire door closer ensures that the door automatically returns to a closed position after being opened, which is crucial for maintaining its fire-resistant capabilities. If the door is left open, it cannot contain the fire and smoke, rendering its function ineffective. Fire door regulations typically require the installation of fire door closers to guarantee that fire doors remain shut, ensuring safety during a fire.

The cost of a fire door can vary depending on the type, materials used, and level of fire resistance. Basic FD30 fire doors, which provide 30 minutes of fire protection, can start from around £70 to £150. However, prices increase if you choose bespoke designs, additional hardware such as fire door hinges or self-closing devices, or more advanced fire doors that offer longer protection. Installation costs also need to be factored in, as professional fitting is essential for the door to meet fire door regulations.

Fire doors are designed to last for many years, but their lifespan can vary depending on their environment and maintenance. Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial to ensuring that the fire door remains in working condition. Fire door regulations require that they are regularly checked for any signs of wear or damage, especially around key components like fire door closers and fire door hinges. When maintained properly, fire doors can last up to 20 years or more, although their components may need to be replaced over time.

The primary purpose of a fire door is to prevent the spread of fire and smoke between compartments of a building. Internal fire doors, such as FD30 fire doors, help to contain the fire in one area for at least 30 minutes, allowing time for evacuation and reducing damage to other parts of the building. By slowing the fire’s progress, fire doors provide critical time for emergency services to respond and help protect lives and property.

Whether you need fire doors in your house depends on various factors, such as the layout of the home and local building regulations. Fire door regulations in the UK require fire doors to be installed in houses with multiple storeys, particularly between the garage and living spaces or on escape routes like stairwells. While not always mandatory in single-storey homes, many homeowners choose to install internal fire doors for added safety, especially if they have areas like kitchens where fire risks are higher.

Fire doors are made from materials that are specifically chosen for their fire-resistant properties. The core material of most fire doors is solid timber, although composite materials, steel, or gypsum may also be used. Internal fire doors often feature fire-resistant glass panels and intumescent seals around the edges. These seals expand when exposed to heat, creating a barrier to prevent the passage of fire and smoke. High-quality fire door hinges and closers are also critical components, ensuring the door remains effective during a fire.

Fire doors work by containing fire and smoke within a specified area of a building. When closed, the door forms a barrier that prevents the fire from spreading into adjacent rooms for a set period, usually 30 or 60 minutes. The intumescent seals around the door’s edges expand in the presence of heat, sealing off gaps that would otherwise allow smoke to escape. Fire door closers help ensure that the door is not accidentally left open, while fire door hinges are designed to withstand high temperatures without warping or failing.

Identifying a fire door can be done by looking for a certification label or plug, typically located on the top edge of the door. This label will indicate the fire resistance rating, such as FD30 or FD60. You can also check for intumescent seals around the door’s edges and inspect the fire door hinges and closers for signs of certification. Additionally, fire doors tend to feel heavier and more robust compared to regular doors, as they are built with thicker and fire-resistant materials.
